East of Badrinath is the exotic Valley of
Flowers in a conical shape with the river Pushpawati flowing through it.This
valley has been declared as a National Park to regulate camping, cooking, grazing
etc. It was in 1931 that Frank Smith and Holds worth stumbled into
this valley while returning their successful Kamet expedition.Their
subsequent writing on the valley evoked a great deal of interest among
people, both at home and abroad. Surrounded by the river Pushpavati and small
streams, at an elevation ranging between 3000 to 4000 meters, the Valley is
nearly 10 kms. in length and 2 kms. in width. The trek starts from Govindghat (19
kms.),on the way to Badrinath, having two major gradients, one initially from
Alaknanda suspension bridge of Govindghat to Pulana village, for 3 kms and other
from Bhunder to Ghanghria. After trekking 3 kms from Ghanghria, a bifurcation
point is reached.
